On January 8, the CPC Central Committee and the State Council held the National Science and Technology Awards Conference in Beijing. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Premier Li Keqiang, Central Committee leaders Liu Yunshan and Zhang Gaoli attended the meeting to confer awards to the recipients, including the National Natural Science Award, the National Technology Invention Award, the National Science and Technology Progress Award and the People's Republic of China International Science and Technology Cooperation Award. The College of Engineering, Peking University won two awards, i.e. "Complicated Coupling Dynamic Control System and Applications" winning the National Natural Science Award (Second Prize), and "Special Liquid Crystal Material and Film Preparation Technology" winning the National Technology Invention (Second Prize).

Team members of the first research project are all from the College of Engineering. They are  Professor Zhisheng Duan, Academician Lin Huang, Assistant Professor Zhongkui Li, Professor Jinzhi Wang, and Professor Ying Yang. The research focuses on key problems in automatic control theory and applications. Through collaborative research by three generations together, important breakthrough was made on certain key issues that met major national needs. Academician Lin Huang, its key member, was named IFAC Fellow in 2013 due to his Fundamental Contribution in control theory. He was also conferred Cai Yuanpei Award in the same year by Peking University, the highest award of the university, for his long and distinguished contributions in scientific research and personnel training.

The second research project was supported by the 863 Projects and driven by business demand. After over a decade of efforts, a series of innovations were made in the development of liquid crystal display (LCD) with light brightness enhancement film, a light transmittance temperature self-regulation of membrane (referred to the thermostat film) and the polymer-dispersed liquid crystal film (referred to as the electronic control film), as well as the key materials preparation technologies. Two of the team members are from COE, i.e. Professor Huai Yang and Engineer Lanying Zhang, while other four collaborators are from the University of Science and Technology Beijing.
