In November 2015, the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM) released the winners of "2015 Xu Zhilun Outstanding Teacher Award of Mechanics”, whereas Associate Professor Kefu Huang of the College of Engineering, Peking University was in the list.

The award was established by CSTAM in recognition of outstanding teachers in China for their achievements made in the mechanics teaching and scientific research. Recommended by the Mechanics Society in the provincial/municipal/regional level, the candidates were then evaluated by  experts selected by CSTAM Education Committee to decide upon the winners. The award was produced every two years. A total of 80 teachers received the honor this time.

Huang, an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanics and Engineering Science, presided over the long-term cooperation with Northwest and North China Electric Power Design Institute and other design departments, to carry out research of the structural safety of power plant cooling towers. Huang has also presided over and participated in many projects of National Natural Science Foundation of China. His research fields include three-dimensional elasticity theory, nonlinear numerical calculation.

Background information:

Xu Zhilun (1911-1999) was an famous expert in mechanics and the mechanics education. He graduated from Tsinghua University in 1934, received a master's degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1936, and another master's degree from Harvard University in 1937. In 1980, Xu was elected to the member of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Xu had long-term commitment to the teaching of engineering mechanics and the research on structural analysis, and especially to the textbooks composition for engineering studies in China. His textbook "Elastic Mechanics" is widely used in the country.
