Introduction of Mechanics and Engineering Science
The Department of Mathematics and Mechanics was originally established at Peking University in 1952. The Department of Mathematics and Mechanics had the first program of Mechanics in P. R. China. The first Head and Professor of Mathematics and Mechanics was the famous scientist Peiyuan Zhou. Due to the rapid development of China’s aerospace industry in the 1950s, the program of Mechanics in Peking University, the exclusive program of mechanics in China, was greatly developed and improved. For example, the China’s first low-speed wind tunnel was built in Peking University in 1958. Up to 1965, the Division of Mechanics at Peking University had more than 90 faculties, and comprised three sub-areas: fluid mechanics, solid mechanics and general mechanics.
