The DMES offers two 4-year undergraduate programs: Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, and Engineering Structure Analysis. Students in either program are required to gain a total of 150 credits before graduation.

Theoretical and Applied Mechanics program was established in the year of 1952 by the famous scientist Professor Peiyuan Zhou. This was the first mechanics program in the history of China’s higher education and has made significant achievement in mechanics education during the past 62 years. It has cultivated thousands of experts in mechanics for the nation, and of whom 15 alumni became academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering. Several classical textbooks written by professors ever worked in this department are extensively used by other universities throughout the nation. The Theoretical and Applied Mechanics program now severs as the Training Base for National Science Foundation of Scientific Research and Teaching Personnel. This program is dedicated to training and preparing students for leading experts in mechanics and engineering science in the world. Currently about 30 undergraduates enrolled in this program each year.

Engineering Structure Analysis program was established in 1996 as the first of its type in China, in order to meet the demand on engineering talents in structure computation and analysis and engineering software development. This program aims at training students’ ability to solve science and engineering problems using the fundamental theories of mathematics and mechanics combined with computer and information techniques, as well as the ability in design and development of engineering software. Students in this program are learning advanced computational theory and methods, techniques for engineering software development and build-up their expertise for engineering structure analysis and solving other practical engineering problems. Currently about 20 undergraduates enrolled in this program each year.

Six graduate programs are offered by The DMES, including Fluid Mechanics, Solid Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Biomechanics and Medical Engineering, Mechanical Systems and Control, and General Mechanics and Foundation of Mechanics. All graduate programs recruit both Ph.D. and M.S./M.E. degree students. The students enrolled in the Ph.D. programs need to gain 45 to 48 course credits; whilst the students pursuing M.S./M.E degrees need to take courses of 40 credits. At the moment, 193 graduate students are enrolled in the Ph.D. programs and 58 graduate students are in the M.S./M.E. programs.
